Relaxed + Authentic Couple Photos

Most couples who book me do so for my documentary approach to wedding photography. They want real moments captured that are woven together to tell the story of their day. Some couples tell me they hate having their photograph taken. It feels awkward, they don’t know what to do, and they much prefer candid photos of themselves when they didn’t know the camera was there.

Almost all of the photos I capture on a wedding day are exactly this. I try to fit in with your guests so you get used to me being there throughout the day so that when I do get close, you don’t feel caught out, and I’m able to capture the best photos possible without pulling you out of the moment.

Let’s go for a walk

First of all, you don’t need to have couples photos if you don’t want them. I’ll usually know beforehand through our pre-wedding catch-up whether or not this is something you’d like. Sometimes there might be loose plans around when and where we’ll do it. Other times, couples just decide on the day that they want to go for a wander.

We’ll fit the couple photos in whenever feels best. They can be done in one go, or split into two short windows to give a bit more variety in location and light.

As these photos show, couples photos can be captured almost anywhere. Against a dramatic backdrop, walking down the street, or even grabbing a quiet drink together in the pub.

Some couples choose a location that means something to them, like this one outside Anfield because they have a personal connection with the place. Some couples like to include their children or their dog in the photos.

As for prompts or asking you to pose? I’ll ask you to chat with each other and try not to look at me. That’s about it. “Stand there”, “get a bit closer”, or “give each other a bit of space”. Nothing complicated.

If you see a photo where a bride is swinging the bouquet above their head or there’s a dip for a kiss, that just happened, it wasn’t suggested by me. Some couples are more natural performers, others just prefer to walk and chat. Whichever you are is right.

Capturing the unexpected moments during the couple photos

There are still moments that happen during the couple photo session that were not planned. You may suddenly hear a song and do an impromptu dance. When you’re walking down the street, there can be unexpected moments as people react to seeing the newly married couple dressed up or adverts that connect with the scene (as above).

A few of my favourite couple photos

Here are some of my favourites I’ve photographed in the last few years from weddings across the country, that I’ve been fortunate enough to capture. They should give you a sense for how I capture these moments and the unique look of my work.
